Audrey Peterman
is a leader in the
movement to
integrate “The Great
Outdoors” and show
how our public lands
are relevant to all
Americans. Mrs.
Peterman and her
husband, Frank,
became captivated
with the beauty of
our country after
taking a
12,000-mile,
40-state trip around
the country, hiking
and camping in
National Parks from
the Everglades to
the Grand Canyon,
Yellowstone and
Yosemite. She is a
model of the
outdoors lifestyle,
being an avid hiker,
camper and
adventurer.
As President and
co-founder of
Earthwise
Productions, Inc., a
consulting and
publishing company,
Audrey and her
husband, Frank, have
published the travel
and environmental
periodical,
Pickup & GO!, for 13
years.
The newsletter
features African
Americans enjoying
the outdoors,
emphasizes the
legacy of people of
color in the public
lands system, and
promotes awareness
of global warming
and climate change
as incentives for
Americans to become
more involved in
conservation.
Mrs. Peterman
is serving her third
term as a member of
the board of the
National Parks
Conservation
Association, (www.npca.org)
and was recently
appointed to the
board of the
Association of
Partners for Public
Lands (www.appl.org).
In Atlanta, Audrey
joins Frank, who is
Director of Public
and Political
Awareness for the
Wilderness Society’s
Southeast region, in
steering the
“Keeping It Wild
Program,” (www.keepingitwild.org)
widely noted for its
racial inclusiveness
in outdoor hikes and
activities.

Robert
Stanton,
Director of
the National
Park System,
1996-2000
"I spent my
entire
professional
career in
the National
Park
Service, and
I couldn't
be more
proud to be
a steward of
America's
natural and
cultural
treasures.
Listening to
Audrey talk
about the
parks,
seeing her
passion and
love and
enthusiasm
for these
places,
makes me
fall in love
with them
all over
again. I
believe that
every
American who
hears Audrey
speak, and
particularly
African
Americans,
will feel a
renewed
sense of
pride in our
natural and
cultural
heritage and
want to see
these places
for
themselves."

Curtis
Mozie, CEO
of the
Miracle
Fruits
Exchange
Inc., Ft.
Lauderdale
I have
explored
this country
from coast
to coast.
But when
Audrey and
Frank shared
the
information
with me
about
African
Americans in
the National
Park System,
I began to
see our
country in a
whole new
light. I
became an
ardent fan
of the parks
and have had
many
exciting
adventures
exploring
the parks
with my
family,
especially
my
grandchildren.
Recently I
participated
in a
re-enactment
and played a
Buffalo
Soldier. It
encouraged
and
motivated me
to
share information
about the
parks with
others, and
to insist
that the
Park Service
include
the contributions of
all who
played key
roles in
establishing
our
National
Parks.
Audrey
does a great
job of
getting this
information
out.

“I hired
Audrey based
on the
recommendation
of a friend
and my
expectations
where more
than met.
Audrey
brings a
wonderfully
contagious
passion to
her work and
teaching. It
was a given
to invite
her back the
following
year.
Feedback
from her
workshops on
“Attracting
Diverse
Constituencies:
Ideas for
Broadening
the
Conservation
Community”
has been top
notch.”-
Andrea
Freeman, The

Reservations

“A few weeks
after Audrey
gave a
fabulous
workshop on
“Attracting
Diverse
Constituencies”
I observed
the impact
of her
passion. A
woman who
had attended
that session
was leading
a planning
session for
her
all-volunteer
(and
currently
all white)
trails
group. This
board chair
shared with
her fellow
board
members what
she learned
from Audrey
and then
they
discussed
how they can
change their
approach to
outreach.
The ripple
effect
begins with
that first
splash and
Audrey makes
that
happen.”
